2021-D Penny -Noticed The "i" In In God We Trust

hhejr New Member United States 3 Posts	Posted 01/26/2022 10:31 pm I unrolled two rolls of 2021D Pennies from the bank. I noticed that the "I" in IN GOD WE TRUST is almost indistinguishable because it is stamped too light. Is this common? The other mints are not like that. First post newbie. I forgot to mention that I have more than one of these from the 2 rolls. My estimate is about 75 of the 100 have this same issue. Also note that on these same pennies the left upright of the "U" in United is the same way but not as severe. I will be posting the original and a secondary one. Thank you for the clarification of being "struck" instead of stamped. I worked in a auto manufacturing stamping department and the term just seemed natural for me. Thanks again and I am excited to know more about these. PS, These pennies have only been handled with gloves on. Report this Post to the Staff
coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 01/28/2022 1:29 pm Die polishing weakened the 'I' in IN. There is evidence of the appearance of Ridge Ring starting. So the die was already polished once before altering the weakened/smaller devices. (When the die is polished, it removes the top of the field from the die. Because the devices are tapered, then the removed field , removes part of the base of the devices, leaving them smaller and the wider base is removed off the bottom of the devices. A thought just hit me. Possibly why the 'I' is weaker, it might have been a die that had Feeder Finger Damage, thus affecting the one device more than the others? (I have not seen FFD on the Cents yet. So that might be what causes this?) Edited by coop 01/28/2022 1:33 pm Report this Post to the Staff
