Found these over some time. Pretty bizarre but I guess anything worthwhile are counterfeited. Can't quite spend it so I guess it doesn't hurt to keep them.

Hi gxseries, it really surprises me that fakes were produced with such a range of dates ... the problem must be more widespread than I realised!

Up until now the only fake $2 coin that I was aware of was the 2003

Wow, people faking those? I mean why, what can you even get with $2 in Australia now, even a cup of coffee is $5+.

Does not seem worth the effort, especially as many shops frown on people paying with change in high amounts.

... probably more than what you can get in NZ for $1!

Apparently the coin pictured below was given in change back in 2009 and handed in to Napier police.

As stated in the article, "It does seem like a lot of trouble to go to. If I was going to do it I'd at least go for the $2 coin. Your reward would be doubled for the same amount of work."

This site shows counterfeit 1992 and 1995 2 dollars

Anything can be counterfeit. This is an example - Chinese 1 yuan. At the time when I got it, it had a face value of just 12 US cents.

Counterfeit-2-Dollars.

2 dollars would be more profitable!

I've got one of the Oz fake $2 in my collection but can't remember what date. I got it among a bag of $2 coins from the bank. Actually, it was pretty cool as I had never heard of one either. I think they hit circulation in the late 1990s. $2 did buy a lot more back then and I think it was a wise move. On close inspection one can see it's a fake but it would easily pass as genuine at pubs, festivals etc. You would easily get a sausage and soft drink at the green shed for 2 of them even today. And as people have observed, no-one would bother faking $2 so no-one would bother checking either. Quite smart really.

In 2017 the UK Royal Mint estimated there were $40 million of fake pound coins in circulation. The old coin has been withdrawn from circulation now and the new one is impossible to forge (so they say)
