I had a very interesting conversation with a coin luminary the other day. No doubt he's someone known to many of you. He feels strongly that we need a better scale to grade copper. His suggestion is:

Brown (no red, <10% red)
Trace Red (10% - 20%)
Brown & Red (25% - 40%)
Red & Brown (45% - 60%)
Mostly Red (60% - 75%)
Red (75% - 90%)
Strong Red (95% - 100%)
Full Red or Blazing Red - strong frost together with 95% --> 100% red.

Superimpose that over subjective eye appeal features like symmetry and that sort of thing and suddenly, the reason why there's a significant difference in the cost of two otherwise very similar coins makes sense.

This was a revelation for me.

The first step should be to understand that there are no copper Canadian coins.
Cents are made of bronze.
Other countries did have coins struck in both copper and bronze.

Bronze is 88% copper with some tin and other metals thrown in. I call it copper because it's mostly copper and this is really not the point anyway.

So it's OK to propose a new grading system whose first assumption is erroneous?
A system like that is too complex.
99.9% of all collectors could not differentiate 5% redness.
"buy the coin and not the holder" trumps any grading system or service.

What are you going to do when your Newfoundland collection moves to the pre-decimal Newfoundland tokens, struck in both copper and brass?
Just call them all copper?

Would it be possible to focus on the actual subject if I promise to never utter the word 'copper' again?

The system as proposed probably would not work .
Too confusing , arguing over 5 % here 5% there.
With DBM on this one , buy the coin and not the holder .
PCGS,NGC, ANACS ,ICCS have very different standards
When it comes to grading , especially when copper , bronze
or alloys thereof are involved .
An example would be a gorgeous lilac and brown fully struck
George V small cent worth about 50 bucks in an ICCS 63 holder
Selling for 400 bucks raw to a knowledgeable collector .
Done it a few times .

I agree that it nearly impossible to break down the degree of red into so many categories. And what happens when the coin continues to tone? It gains a different designation.

Here is a perfect example, from an auction this past weekend (London Coin Centre). So, for a registry collector MS-65RD provides 2 bonus points (RB is 1 bonus point, B is no bonus points). That said, ultimately, it is eye appeal that impacts the price.

@SPP bingo!
Describes the scenario perfectly .
Eye appeal and overall sexiness
wins over any number on someone's holder .
