1869 Shield nickel, passed down from my great grandmother. Someone gave it to her when she was a little girl, and she never spent it. I'm glad she didn't,it's sentimental to us now. sn31.

Quote: In many ways all great coin collections are part of a cycle of death and rebirth. In fact, a major tenet of many belief systems is that something is destroyed in order for other things to be able to be created... Very true. With that kind of outlook, things do not seem so bad!

An 1889-S Morgan that my Grandma let me pick out from her little stash of silver dollars. I still have and would never part with it.

About 10 years ago,I worked with a guy that was a collector. He brought coins in to work to show me once in a while. That piqued my interest.I had a few old coins myself, but never really collected any, just put them in a box and looked at them once in a while.Meanwhile,my youngest son turned 18 and I decided to cash in an old life insurance policy for my ex-wife...LOL I then had a few thousand bucks, and decided to invest in Type II S mint Double Eagles. So that was the first coin I bought,an 1870 AU-58 NGC.I ended up getting 5 different dates, and ran out of money. But caught the bug BAD.....Took a few years off,and then decided to complete my Peace dollar set, and found this place.I have learned alot in the few months I have been lurking and posting here. Thanks,to all of you. Been looking, need money...Brewzz

"The_Duke- Whatever happened to the rest of her stash?" Well, she sold off most of it. She had silver dollars and a couple of gold pieces. She also gave me a Wheat cent book 1941 + that someone had given her. I started most of my collection at my family's hardware store in the 60s and 70s. I would go through all the tills "searching" for keepers.

I had two uncles that collected and would give me a coin now and then when they came thru town. From there a sister that worked at dairy queen and would keep any mercury head dimes, buffalo nickels and Indian Head penny's she would get in change. Started searching rolls of penny's and put together a book of penny's. Then 10 years ago started buying mint Set's for Christmas for the nieces and nephews and well, might as well get some for me to! Then really fell over the edge recently when decided to start filling the holes in the penny book and purchased a 1911s,1912s and 1914s penny at a coin show, my first real purchase and I think it's all down hill from here as I started buying Franklin half dollars to put together a book Yikes!!

My first coins were three gold German 20 Mark coins give to me when I was young by my Grandmother. She had them when she immigrated to the US from Poland at the turn of the 20th century. Wish I would have held onto them.
