So what was the first collectible coin that you either bought or received in some manner? Ultimately was this the coin that piqued your interest in numismatics? I remember that when I was about 8 I found a 1906 Indian Head penny in some dirt in a public park. Due to the fact that I showed so much interest in this coin, my father pulled a few common date morgan and Peace dollars out of his safe deposit box and encouraged me to start a collection. I did just that and have been collecting ever since. When it comes to the first coin that I ever bought, I am unable to recall. I know that I started with US coins, but after a couple of years switched to coins of the world.

I have not been collecting that long, less than a year, but what really got me interested was the first time I saw the packaging of my 1979 Proof Set.

I remember the first coin I bought was a 1974 Eisenhower dollar, with the second coin I bought being a 1895 Indian Head cent. But it was actually the different coins I found in circulation that got me interested in collecting. Such as the Mercury dime, 1950 quarter, bicentennial halves, and the miriad of foriegn and dollar coins that I found in circulation at my job. And lets hear it for Archaz's 1000th post!!

When I was 10, my family moved from the Chicago area to upstate New York. It was in between 4th and 5th grade and I wasnt a happy camper, so my dad made me sign up for the Pop Warner football team to force me to meet new friends. I didnt care for it, but he said that if I finished the season, I wouldnt have to play any future seasons unless I wanted to, and my reward was an 1885 Morgan dollar. That was all I needed to hear, and I ended up liking it enough that I played two more seasons (stopped after 7th grade after a wicked concussion left my head in a fog for months).

For me there were several, but two that stand out in my mind were a Canadian 1971 British Columbia circulation dollar my parents saved from their time in Canada, and an Australian 1966 round 50¢ piece.

One night when I was about 8 or so, I was helping my mother dig a garden in the back yard. I pulled out a shovelful of dirt to find a Canadian 1958 50-cent piece.

jbuck Lemme guess, even though I have had some fun exchanges, I only know you a little bit and I'm very glad for that but this was easy. Two Eisenhower Dollars but a 1969 proof set was your first coins you bought. I know cause we been in a thread like this here before.

I also have several:
I received a silver french 1916 50 centimese as change on my paper route when I was a kid. (I think I gave this coin to someone in one of the pay it forward contests)
The first coin I bought was a steel penny, which hooked me on USA Coins.
But my favorite is when someone gave me a 1986 $100 peso coin as change on my paper route. It was gold in color with the "$100" so big. I was probably about 6 or 7 at the time, and I thought for sure I was just handed a $100 gold coin. Little did I know that the coin was hardly worth the quarter that I was supposed to receive, but it sparked my interest non the less.
