I found this a few years ago and I have been trying to identify it since. I know it's lost to the elements. I found it along the bank of bayou Courtableau. In the early 1800's approx. 100 feet along each bank was cleared and flattened so mules could pull barges along (or so I read). Of course everything has since grown up but evidence of the flat area is obvious. The coin showed copper on my detector and was buried around 8 inches. The union troops also camped very close by during the civil war. I was able to find around a dozen bullets and a buckle. Anyway , I don't know if the two are connected. The coin is heavy weighs over 12 grams I think and it around 33 millimeters in diameter. It seems to match up with a British penny of George the fourth. Louisiana soil has reclaimed it. Any tips on how to discover what it is?

I'm not sure how to begin on this one.

Lots of times I'll use Numista for trying to get images for a coin. They will provide lots of coni info such as diameter, metal type, weight, etc.

When I get into a quandry trying to ID something, I'll get out my loupe and sketch any details I'm able to see.
This one kind of reminds me of trying to ID a middle eastern or Asian coin when you don't even know which side is up or what the characters mean.

Did you try doing a rubbing to see if you could coax any details from either face?

Try ghost writing. Put the coin under a piece of paper. Then lightly write scribble on the paper. See if anything comes up legible.

I love a good mystery, can you take pictures of both sides and at a couple different angles? I was looking at an old British Penny and maybe it could be it. The mystery coin appears to have denticles.

Manipulating one of your pictures I can start to see a picture of a face with maybe a crown on.

I'm not really seeing any evidence that it was a coin. I certainly can't see any pattern or lettering that I can point at and say "that's actual surviving detail and not Pareidolia".

Not everything round and made of metal is numismatic.

I disagree, I do think there is a strong suggestion it is a coin, I also think it's not worth anything but a cool find to the finder.
But.! I do think I can distinctly make out a number 2 along the bottom. It's in the black box.
