Guessing someone stepped on it or it got dirty/marked in some other way. Not sure there is any way to really know for sure.

Since the marks are on both faces in what appears to be the same orientation, it could have gotten run between the rollers of...something?

I just glanced at the soles of my shoes. So, I walked outside for a minute and then partially stepped on a random dollar bill from my wallet. Looks very similar.
