I bought a bunch of coins (80 pieces) at once from a good collector. Many of them I know are replica's, fakes, copy's, restrikes, and even some small real silver world coins. I did the quick tests like the magnetic first, to weed out the weak so to speak. Then I checked the pinging sounds and try to pick out the ones I thought would be silver.
And ultimatly I used the side scratch / acid test to check and from all 80 of them around 10 tested positive (some of them which I thought but some suprised me).

Here are 4 coins who are definetly silver, I even did the gravity test hanging each coin in the water on a scale and then did the maths. They are all between 75%/90% silver give or take...

I would love to get some ideas of what they are? Because they cant be real (right?) or are the really good fake coins, restrikes or just a silver copy? Please let me know your thoughts

2/3 Thaler 1692 Friedrich III Brandenburg Prussia Germany = Real Silver - 18,5 Gram

Thaler 1559 Zurich Switserland = Real Silver - 26,2 Gram - Replica or Restrike (heavier then original restrike!?)

Thaler 1603 - Maximilian III Grand master of the Teutonic Order = Real Silver - 30,8 Gram

Thaler? 1696? Unknown? MONETA FRANCO ETC = Real Silver - 29.5 gram

All of them look like they were cast, not struck. What do the edges look like? There should be casting lines or some other evidence that it was made from a mold. Cast copies could be made of silver, although this seems unusual.

The edges are semi-rugged but smooth so no reeded. And indeed at least 3 of them look like they are made in a mold, but believe me they are all made out of silver! I triple checked it and the acid tests confirmed it, I even did the water test to determine how much silver is in it aproximatly. It would not appear to be silverplated..

How come? Silver is not that expenisve right?

@kingz, I am wondering why someone would make a copy. Usually people do it to make money dishonestly. Why spend $25 to make a fake when you can do it for $1? However, I know that many silver copies of thalers were made in Germany, but ALL were clearly marked so it did not fool anyone. These were intended as valuable gifts.

I am sure that yours ARE silver, but most copies are not. It just seems unusual, that's all.

Thanks for the reply and I understand + agree, this is why I was wondering too and post this topic haha hoping someone could clearify. Could they be contemporary counterfeits or just Chinese copy's? So many questions and options :)

The thing is, a counterfeit is not a copy and a copy is not the same as a replica and a replica not the same as a restrike etc & vice versa.. These days nothing surprises me which is being "faked" to fool or to fill an album.
