So this is one of the foreign coins my grandfather had on top his dresser. I'm assuming he picked up during his time in the navy. Feels heavy, but I'm not familiar with identifying what works on which metals.

Ok I have no idea the date on this, nor anything else it Says other than the "five millemes" and what I think is a "190" but can't be sure

I think that would be 1952. Type "reading dates in Libyan coins" and several websites will show you how to read the characters.

@ccb, have you considered not cleaning it at all? That is a very pleasant ruddy patina on this coin. The black and green is a little distracting, but I like the overall look. With that said, some folks here like VerdiCare for copper coins.

I mean I was also talking about the green, concerned it could spread further if not taken care of, but again I'm new to this!! Should I leave it alone?

@ccb, I think that this is a pretty young coin to be suffering from bronze disease. More likely seems that the green is stable patina. Let's see if anyone else weighs in though as perhaps you are correct.
