I've read a little about replating on 1943 steel pennies. I was curious about this one I found. I know they're counterfeits, ect. To this year of coin. So I guess I was curious about an info for plating or if the date looks funny. It is magnetic, so I know it is steel, but was taken back by the copper tone. Thank you for any info!

@sun, I think that you might be conflating two things here. Steel cents are sometimes reprocessed by unscrupulous people to make them shiny again. More specifically the surface layer of zinc applied at the mint is removed and the cents are re-plated. On the other hand, with your cent, the aftermarket plating was with copper. This was intended to fool someone into thinking they had found one of only a handful of 1943 cents made from copper planchets. Good for you in checking whether a magnet was attracted to this cent.

@spence

Thank you! That makes sense. My bf also just told me the difference between novelty coins they made and counterfeit pieces. Quite interesting!

When they are re-plated, they have a sheen that the originals do not have. MD-67

The chrome plated ones seem to be ubiquitous. I saw them in the 1960's. Does anyone know the actual history of the plated ones? Who was doing it and why?

Right. But not every one has a plating device in their garage and fewer would have the desire to do so. Were they marketed by some company, for advertising, or a bored crazy person?

Yes there were companies that would take 100 of your pennies, plate them and you would get back 50. They wound make their profit on the 50.
