The 'S' looks like it is sheared up (toward the date). In other words, there is a considerable slope from the field to the bottom of the 'S'. The pics are not great, but might help a bit.

Any ideas here? Could just be that the 'S' happened to take a hit.

Just looks like heavy wear to me.

The coin is in VF. Only the 'S' has the damage. Perhaps the pictures are poor, I don't know.
