The 1857 Proof Half Cent price on PCGS Price Guide has nearly doubled in price since last update. Is this a mistake, or driven by recent sales? There is no report on the PCGS site of recent sales, but they don't report everything. Anyone on this forum have any insight on this?

Thank You.

About a year ago, PCGS hired the very well qualified Mark Ferguson to take over and be in charge of the PCGS Price Guide. He's been updating all series using auction sales data on a regular basis. Here's the PCGS announcement of the most recent series's that have been updated, which as you can see includes Proof Braided Hair Half Cents. Congrats to those of us that have the Half Cents needed. To those still hunting, "you snooze, you lose".

To be somewhat clearer, I personally don't own ANY Proof Half Cents of ANY design, and have no intention of purchasing any.

The few Half Cents I own are all business strikes.

1857 Half Cent in PR 65 BN:

CDN CPG Retail: $8,000
NGC: $8,250
Last auction appearance in January 2022: $6,775
PCGS: $15,250

The PCGS price guide seems to be the outlier by quite a margin.

I'm guessing, but:
1. Maybe since it's a thin market with not a lot of sales, they're looking at sales of other dates too, including sales in several grades, to obtain a "generalization" among a group of dates with somewhat similar pops?
2. It's possible the sale in January 2022 MAY have been too recent to have included in their data base?
3. Maybe, as you suspect, they just messed up?

Glad I chose NOT to collect proofs.
Too expensive.
I've got a full date set of Braided Hair business strike Half Cents.
AND
According to both Fuhrman's and Grellman's books there are no varieties.
Everything is listed as C-1 (Cohen-1).
