Hi all,

Having trouble putting an ID to this coin.
Weight - 3.49g
Diam - ~15.5mm
Material - Possible copper but looks more like bronze.
Have plugged the stats into Zeno but nothing similar.

@Ozleigh - Thankyou. That's definitely in the right direction. I had seen the term billon before but not known what it meant until now.

Thanks

"Billon" means "debased silver" - less than 50%. Normally, the word "billon" is used when the actual silver content was either unknown or variable. It's most often used to describe the base-silver coins of mediaeval and early modern France and Germany.

Normally, billon coins would be issued as a result of debasement; a coin that was once fine silver was gradually debased over a century or two until it became billon. The Sultanate of Dehli (the country that issued the OP's coin) was unusual in striking a "tetrametallic" coinage system, treating "billon" as a separate metal. Coins of gold, fine silver, billon, and copper were issued simultaneously by several rulers.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Thanks for extra info Sap. The knowledge on this forum is pretty outstanding!

AndyG - I assume G&G is a catalogue but can't find it online.

Goron & Goenka, IIRC. I have no idea where it could be found, but I've seen it as a reference to other Indian coins.

If you are collecting Sultanate coins then Goron and Gorenka is a must;
https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?p=l...300&lot=1777
it's getting on a bit now since it was printed, no doubt there are types not listed, but it's still the only catalogue type book of Sultanate coins.

The reason for mentioning the number is that if you search on Zeno for D233, you'll find other examples of the above coin to compare yours to :)
