So in this bag of nickels my grandfather gave me a cpl weeks ago, along with the foreign coins, the slick shield, separate bag of '60s D mint pennies, and the '27 S Washington, I find this awfully dark fellow. I've read the entire thread about black beauties and how really prominent among 58 & 59, but then some after ppl said maybe? However I didn't see anything in the '80s asking about being in the black beauty category!?!? I'm sure its probably something else, but papaw kept it among a lil ziploc with 4 or 5 bucks worth of 30's, 40's, 50's & 60's nickels, with this being the only one this color!

Was hoping to get a lil insight on what kind of environmental things can cause this blackening

yes, environmental toning on that nickel. Look at the rim on the reverse, lower right, the toning was been rubbed off revealing the silvery color of the nickel underneath.

Looks like the nickel color is showing through on the rims.

what causes this kind of toning? a lot of things, it could have been in the ground for a while, I have also heard that someone can take a hobby torch and cook it in an attempt to create a black beauty.

Perhaps humidity plus sunlight, but it could also be from buried in the ground, exposed to chemicals, or just sitting in a cup holder in the car submersed in old soda pop.

Anything environmental. Buried, extreme moisture, fire, take your pick.
