How much would you pay for this? It is absolutely gorgeous and intrigues me, but I don't collect Canadian commemoratives as a rule (only have the Maple Leaf from POTN set right now.) Thanks. "Nummi rari mira sunt, si sumptus ferre potes." - Christophorus filius Scotiae

I agree with you - it's a gorgeous piece!
The coin's reverse reproduces the reverse of the 1867 Canadian Confederation medal very well.
As you are likely aware, the piece weighs 10 troy ounces of 0.9999 fine silver. Its issue price was $899.95 CAD; approximately $695 USD. Though I thought about getting one at the time, I decided it was priced higher than I was willing to pay.
If the price was around $400 USD at the time, I likely would have moved forward with the purchase. Today, I'd pay no more than 2X spot. I realize it's NCLT and not bullion, but I generally draw the line on large-format, precious metal modern pieces at ~2X spot.
Just my opinion, your mileage may vary!

I wouldn't pay anything for it because I am not interested in buying it. If you are asking about valuation, that is different. On ebay, one sold for $1200 recently. On the other hand you could still buy it for issue price of $899.95. https://www.cdncoin.com/1867-Confed...83603211.htm

Thanks for the replies. This piece is on auction and currently at about $225 US. We will see how far it moves up, but I agree about no more that 2X spot.

Monney Penney, I'm sorry, but the link to a coin you are showing 'still at list price' isn't the same as what the OP was showing - they are very similar. I don't know why there are two issues, but Cest La Vie (a) it's not double dated, and (b) there is only one queen on the obverse. The coin in question is still available through CC&C but at a substantial premium

One is a medal and the other one isn't as it has a face value of $100.

The coin you are considering is the first of three. The third and first are my favorite. I had no problem with the decision at the time as I have a great interest in Canada and it's history. These were minted in commemoration of Canada 150 and are stunning in hand. If they were newly offered today I would easily make the same decision (look at the price of the NCLT 5 oz coins are currently being offered. These are in actual coin format, not gimmicky like some, and full of history. That said if you don't collect Canadian commemoratives and are looking at it for silver value, it's about there at current price. If not looking to stack silver I would have the set of three as a goal at some point. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for the additional insight, @smuglr. There is another one of these in the same auction, currently at the same price. It is described as the "Diamond Jubilee" edition. With ~8 hours before the auction begins, I will expect the price to quickly jump beyond what I can afford. I'm interested in this piece for the wonderful artistry rather than intrinsic value. But I do have a ceiling as suggested above.

@Bump111 Please let me know how these auctions come out or where they are. I would be interested in the outcome. Good luck again.

These two Canadian $100 coins are on auction at the following site: The price has actually dropped off since I last checked (perhaps a retracted bid) and is just above $200 US.

Don't forget the Buyer's Fee (22%) and shipping/packaging fee! As of right now, the two would add between $50 and $60 to the hammer price. (Likely to be more by the time the auction closes.)

It is a beautiful coin from an artistic point. They are probably not often available, especially at close to melt, but I do notice some possible issues around the rim, especially on the second coin, and some toning on the crowns on the obverse of the one you are looking at. Once again good luck, let us know if you get it.

The coin ended up selling at $330 + fees. The other offering went for $360 + fees. I bowed out at $320. I feel like the buyer may have gotten a good deal when I see what these go for in other places.

Pretty poor results for coins that originally sold for CDN $899.95.
US$ 330 = CDN$ 419 US$ 360 = CDN$ 457
Not surprising though because that is the current state of most NCLT coins. When they go on auction they are usually discounted 50% - 70% of issue price.

I bought the CC&C 10 oz silver in an auction last year for the reserve price of $550 CDN which is still a bit more that I wanted to pay but a bargain compared to the RCM issue. The coppers were selling for roughly half of that originally and I sold the matching one I had at a loss.
