Looks MD to me also. I see no mint mark, so it is from the Philly mint. John1

I third Machine Doubling. MD + wear can be especially deceiving, but the distortion of the shape of the 4 is clearly MD.

I would clean the date with some acetone to get a better look inside the loop of the "2". Could it be a 2 over 1?

Double post. But fairly common for these date to appeared like that on later years of circulated Mercury dime, if you get the chance to search through bags of Mercury dimes, you will know what I mean. These are produced in hundreds of million, so dates gets deteriorate faster somehow.
