Could anyone tell me the approximate value of this coin?
Also, the flip it came in said 1850-O, but this is a P, correct?
Thanks!

First I would grade this coin as VF-25. Secondly it may have has the mintmark removed or altered. 1850P is a low mintage coin and value for the 1850P in VF is in the neighborhood of $600, While the value for the more common 1850 O is about $100

Interesting coin, thanks for sharing. I definitely see the toolmarks.

Here it is! The O is partially visible still.

The O looks like it was clawed off.

It started out as an 1850-O. The mm has been altered.

One way to verify is to count the number of reeds on the coin. Philadelphia half dollars in 1850 had 145 reeds. New Orleans half dollars in 1850 had either 141 or 148 reeds. Reed counting can be a pesky adventure. I always used a small piece of masking tape to cover along the edge of one reed, and counted around the coin in the opposite direction, peeling off the sliver of tape only when I could see the last covered reed.

Having understood all of that, what would the value of the coin be given the damage?

Got it! Thanks for the advice. Looks like I probably overpaid a little at $90.

Not a very scientific guess. I just sort of cut the value of a choice VF in half.
