I purchased this uncirculated silver eagle from the U.S. Mint last year. I was doing some coin organizing over the weekend and decided to take a closer look at this coin. I took the uncirculated coin out of the capsule and noticed that on the obverse edge above LIBERTY extending from E to R it appears to have a missing portion of the rim next to the reeding. Is this the result of a partial collar error? Or something else? Is this common with silver eagles? Thanks in advance for your comments.

That is common on all coins from time to time. When you see them in a clear plastic tube, look at the edges of the coins? This one is probably struck twice from West Point.

Coop, are you saying that this is a partial collar error? Or are you saying that this silver eagle was double struck improperly causing this error to occur? With all due respect, Coop, it is an error and is not supposed to have a partial rim like this, isn't that correct?

I'm curious if this is really a common place error on Silver Eagles. If so, I'd like feedback from those of you in the Community who collect them.

I like partial collars, indifferent of the material. Interesting thing to studies. This it is not, is far. Sorry I do not go further, it is simply not partial collar. Please learn that the silver and gold coins do not react to strike same with the others materials coins.

There is a significant portion of the rim missing on the obverse of this uncirculated Eagle just above LIBERTY. If this is not a partial collar error, could it be a skidding die error? https://www.error-ref.com/?s=skidding+die+errorsMaybe a skidding misalignment or a design ablation error?

This is a normal coin. They look like that normally. Not a partial collar.

Normal? An uncirculated Eagle with with an inch of it's rim above LIBERTY missing is normal? The rim is damaged---and this is an uncirculated Eagle which came straight from the Mint. How can a Silver Eagle leave the Mint with this much of it's rim damaged and/or missing?

I would sure like to hear from other experts and/or Eagle collectors who can help answer my questions about this coin--- for which I paid $67 to acquire from the U.S. Mint!! Now, I am trying to decide if it is worth keeping to add to my Eagle collection. It certainly would not grade very well with the gouged/missing rim on the obverse...
