I don't particularly care for many of the modern commem designs, but I think the Mint came up with a nice one for Columbus' 500th. My example has a really beautiful deep orange-gold color, unlike any other gold coin in my collection. Gold is chemically inert and doesn't normally develop toning, but the copper component of the coinage alloy can. I presume that is what happened to create this coin's particular shade.
