MS-62? But what is that on the reverse near the top of the wreath?

Also looks to be the MPD in denticles variety, FS-301.

Quote: Tell us about the luster, please. The pic is pretty good, I think. There's some luster coming through that grey nickel, but it's sort of creamy.

business strike. I like the full columns. thats what I look for first. I'm at AU58 or MS60. its a touch call as the high point of the cheek shows some very light wear as well as the high point of the bow but it could be the photos.
I'm leaning toward the MS side. the reason I have it at 60 is the coin lacks the luster of the higher grades and the obverse strike. it is an overall pleasing coin.

Minor Doubling on the Obverse I think, check the beads. Business strike and MS63 for me.

Some minor handling marks, usual flat and lifeless obverse strike from poor quality dies, no evidence of any real circulation wear - and being an 1888 it's not likely to have circulated regardless. You can't expect to see booming cartwheel luster on these coins, that's a truly scarce occurrence on the lower Unc. business strikes. The luster tends to be metallic and almost "greasy" for lack of a better word. Date in denticles (visible below 1st 8) Reverse is rotated with a couple of minor scratches @ 4:00 on the rim.
I'd say MS62.

Little surprised by the grade. I don't really see any evidence of circulation. I think the people who called this a slider are on the money.

No matter the grade a super tough coin in Proof or Business Strike. A really nice example I still think it may grade higher on a resub.
