I was gifted a collection which came with these 2 nice date coins. Unfortunately, both are corroded. I am curious what you all think they grade at (if gradable), if they are worth submitting, and if conservation would benefit them. Thanks a lot. The 66 has a RPD.

. The IHC would have to grade at least XF40 to justify all costs involved in slabbing. What RPD number is it? Might try a 100% acetone soak, not standard nail polish remover. The 1885 nickel in G4 is about $300, so might be worth professional conserving depending on what that cost. John1

Thanks for looking. John1, I had to check after you asked, and I believe it's actually DDO FS-101 S-1 (007.6). The doubling on the letters in the detail picture is on all the lettering, and doubling is also visible on the head and feathers as well.

Just enjoy the coins as they are. Not much you can do for them.

Agree - both of these are beyond restoration, and money down the drain to pursue it for either coin.

looks like they were improperly stored for many years. its a shame about 85 as this coin imo would grade as high as VG10. I doubt acetone will help but its worth a shot (not nail polish remover) the coin even may be worth sending in for conservancy. do not use anything to attempt to clean this coin other than that. hope that helps

I don't see all the evidence for this being an 1866 S-1 DDO/MPD. There are pretty bold digits that stick out of the pearls and the denticles, which I don't see here. It may just be the pics, but the only letters where the DDO is really visible is going to be LIBERTY in the headband. The MPD in the denticles is very bold and I would still expect to see it in this condition.

High VF details on the Indian, some Longacre doubling (not true DD) Looks like a dug coin (detector find, etc)
The 1885 has value as a filler coin even in that condition, VG details.

No doubt they have filler value, especially the '85 nickel.

Two nice coins to have but extremely Environmentally Damaged. Enjoy them for just what they are.
