Thoughts on this coin? Just PMD (tool mark) or strike through?

To me it appears as a struck through debris. (that fell off the coin) The opposite side appears not affected. I see no wave of splash metal on that area. It looks like something that was squared stock. Could even be a match stick? (Wood or paper) But it prevented the strike that that device, and we have an idea of the shape of the struck through. It might be my imagination, but it looks like wood grain on the last image. (thus the reference to a stick match)

With that metal "smushed" out from the rim, my vote is that this is damage.

I saw the "smushed metal" , but wondered if there was debris that fell on to the coin just before strike - where would the displaced rim metal go - possibly into a "smush" on the edge? I also saw a line that looked like the inside edge of the rim that was visible in the incuse area- again got me thinking something softish so that this detail still showed.

Is that was intentional, that person is a surgeon, the precision at the bottom of the gauge in terms of a defined edge without any noticeable marks from slip of the sharp edged tool, is odd and amazing.

I got to go with the master here. Coop, everything he says makes sense. No damage on the opposite side, no build up on the edges of the trough = strike thru.

I am still leaning towards strike through as well. Just seems to clean. The way you can still see the "I" after it was smashed and the details at the rim and edge. Thanks everyone for you comments and thoughts. Think I will keep it in a 2x2 as a conversation piece.
