I have 2 1897S Morgans- one is a VAM4 , the other I don't know what VAM it might be.

In looking at both of them, I noticed that the VAM4 Date is closer to the rim than the other one, especially the 897.

VAM World lists a few 1897's as near dates, but not the 1897S VAM4, and the near date is being called farther to the left, not high or low.

The positioning of the dates on these 2 coins are clearly different.
The VAM4 is Low and the other one is High.

Something new, or was the "NEAR DATE" omitted for the VAM4?

As you've already figured out, most VAM identification centers on the particular characteristic which most clearly defines the VAM - in the case of your VAM-4, the repunched 1. In a lot of cases, supporting data like date placement and accompanying die cracks just doesn't get recorded.

My guess is, the location of the date just hasn't been recorded for this one. This lack of additional data is a source of irritation to me sometimes, but then I consider how many VAM's there are....

Hi

Looks to me that both are near dates. One is low and the other
in normal position as far as height. I see a crack on the one of the
listed VAM 4 and another fine crack coming off the neck on it.
Maybe you already figured that in. Maybe the one in question is the normal date for that year. ? (near date)
