found this 1980 in pocket change this evening. is this a double die obverse? and if it is what kind of shape is it in? fairly new to this. Thanks in advance.

Looks like MD not a doubled die.yes it would be called a doubled die,not a double die. Here are the three sites we all check:http://varietyvista.com/

Your are looking in the wrong area of the date. On the outside/inside edges of the devices is where you will find Machine Doubling.

For the doubled dies, the spread is in the center of the design:
1980--Double-Die-Obverse-Correct?-Condition?
So look at the centers of the devices and not the edges of devices if you are looking for a doubled die. The machine damages the devices after the strike on Machine Doubling. A doubled die has the doubling on the die, thus the term Doubled Die
