The coin is probably genuine but the "error" is not.
This is impossible to happen during the striking of a coin
so It is intentionally done and it is classed as PMD.

Almost forgot to the CCF

Can't completely satisfy myself with the images on my screen.
Is the "GIVS" incuse or relief?

I suspect this is a 'garage job' - someone with too much time on their hands created a 'die' by squeezing a George VI coin against another coin or some metal object in a vise, and then squeezed the homemade 'die' against this penny to create the 'error'.

In the 1960s the British penny was subject to all kinds of mistreatment by schoolkids and students - it was big, it had a very low face value, you could mess around with it and mutilate it and still spend it afterwards! And if you lost it or completely destroyed it, it wasn't the end of the world!

What a helpful forum.I was given a bag of old coins,am not a collector, though I do metal detect and have an interest. The letters GEORGIV are in relief ,though that side of the coin is much smoother than the other. It baffled me as at first I just presumed it was ermmm squashed!
Then I realised the imprint was from an older coin and was not back to front as it should be.
Appreciate all the replies.Ive learned more in the past few minutes of reading, than a whole week of searching online and in Facebook groups.

It's always nice when a "newbie" admits that they have actually
learned something instead of arguing that we are all wrong.
Also nice cropped photos. Looking forward to your next posting.
