I have read a few short articles about the U.S. change over from silver to clad in 1965. I know there were some rumblings in 1964 and hoarding had already begun. My questions are: how often did silver coinage circulate in the next few years after 1964; and did nickels circulate more frequently (i.e. 2 nickels replacing dimes) when change was given due to a shortage of dimes particularly in 1965? Any links to articles or personal stories would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If my memory serves me right most people didn't know about that. The majority of people really don't care what money of any kind is made of. Remember that out of 300,000,000 people in the USA, Probably only 200,000,000 back then, the only ones that even noticed are the coin collectors. And regardless of what you may think, that is only a small percentage of people in the USA. So every time the government changed a coin, most didn't know, care, wonder about it. Live just went on. I still remember when they tried to change the penny to Steel. The only people effected were the vending machine people and not to many of those back then either. My Dad had a machine back then that took pennies. Always got jammed by those but that was great since I ended up with them.

I remember being able to pull silver out of circulation up until Jr High School (1966)and only being limited by how much money I had to stash away. I mowed lawns all week after school and spent Saturdays at the local Bank of America where they let me go through roll after roll of half dollars taking out all the silver ones till I had converted all my lawn money into silver. I remember going in one Saturday and having one of the tellers call me over and they had saved me some Barber halves some one had turned in. They had all split them up and then agreed to save $10 worth for me. I have always wondered how many they actually found.
