Hello I'm new to the forum and I have a 1942 Mercury dime which appears to have a severe San Francisco mint mark error. Posting pictures here for any comments that can help me determine what happened to this coin at the mint and if it is very rare or one of a kind.

Not an error. It is probably a no mm dime with damage.
What you are asking is impossible to happen during the striking of the coin.
