Just watched a YT video on 1987 Dimes. Saw some tilted P mm's. That is a new one I've never seen before. Are these pretty common? I'm guessing they are since they are done by hand but would appreciate any thoughts. Should I add it to the myriad of things to look for? Thanks

Being tilted is not unusual. As you said, they were hand punched into the Die and as long as they were below the date and to the right of the bust, it was acceptable.
Also if that Die minted say 800,000 coins they would all look the same.

My thought is if you find an extra-wonky example then save it as an exemplar. The cost of ownership is low and it is of course ok to save things that are interesting but only worth face value. For the reasons stated by @jimmy though, I wouldn't start saving them all.

Gotcha. I can see how that would be a little nerve-racking trying to get that MM punch perfect. In the line of work I do we have to occasionally stamp part numbers and it's not that easy to get it perfect. What I find cool is that an actual human had to do it by hand with a punch and a mallet. Thanks for the responses.

Find a better way to spend your time than looking for tilted mint marks. Please.

The mintmarks on coins prior to 1990 were done by hand so I'd imagine there would be quite a few examples where the mintmarks were tilted. I'd say they're only really notable if they're at least at a 45 degree angle.
