It looks like the D stamp was not stamped, but punched? Anyone ever seen something like this?

A rather cool example of split plating with the mint mark. Zinc core was exposed, localized rotting took hold, and--over time--the mint mark fell off (exfoliated, in a sense).

Look to see of someone outlined the mintmark area to make the plating come off? There should be deeper cut marks around the base of the mintmark if it was altered?
