Not really sure why you're asking? You have the coin in hand.

It doesn't. Rarity and demand does. Anybody can get a tone on a coin in multiple ways. In my opinion, I think toning is a distraction to a coin.

@ Dear: You are right. 95% of the rainbow toned coins are fake. Those effects are produce in two different ways; 1. First and last coin in paper rolls and the other side is clean and 2. Gold and Silver coins (some times others denominations) in capsules, but those develop side toning and not all around, this because on this part of capsule could be an exchange of air so the oxygen can penetrate till the surface or side of the coin. Without oxygen exchange it is not possible this toning.

Me I like toned coins and in special the Nickel. I have now 22 different tone of grey from normal till grey crude oil color. All has same toning on both sides, and is due to the exposition to the UV. Important to mention the toning is in majority of the cases produce on proof coins on the most part of the time and very small times on uncirculated coins in original first roll.

Hope help this post to someone.

Buy the early 1960's proof nickels in the cellos. You will find some nice ones in them. They are for sale a lot on 'The.Bay' pretty reasonable. They call them a roll, in spite them being in cellos. Get some nice colors on these.

Toning is officially post mint damage, but some collect the more pronounced versions.
