I have inherited a large coin collection and am just starting into it.
I have a number of Canadian silver dollars years 1974-1979 in cases from the Canadian mint and am wondering if these are proof sets or just nickle

Bring a magnet close to them, Silver no reaction, Nickle will feel the pull of the magnet. With a decent magnet, you should be able to leave the coins in the case.

The ones in your photo's are 50% silver. As a rule for dollars dated before 1978, if the leatherette box is blue, its a nickel coin. If the box is black, its a silver coin.

If it is a 50% silver coin, would it be magnetic?

No. The other 50% is copper - another non-magnetic metal.

A good resource for detailed information about your coins is The Charlton Press book called 2022 Canadian Coins Volume 2 (11th Edition is the most current).

Good luck!
