This coin is similar to another cent I just posted, in that it is on a split planchet, in an ANACS holder, and labeled "split after strike." This one is a bit thicker at 1.52g, and has a light bit of Lincoln's profile showing through.

Shouldn't this be a split before strike uniface label? My guess is that a split planchet entered the chamber with a blank planchet on top of it. The strike through the planchet allowed for a strong reverse to be struck, while creating the uniface obverse.

How accurate am I and was ANACS wrong?

By design and flip this make more sense. BUT? Why we still have rim? and also this smooth surface? You make me not to send to ANACS the package.

If at the Campus labs you has an SEM-EDX, make the test. You will find the year of the coin like this and the Close AM answer will have the answer. Do not forgot the TPG today spend 30 sec to max 2 min to certify a coin.

Nice one TB.

IMHO, because there is a distorted impression of the reverse, it seems like this is an early or mid-stage brockage on a split planchet (based on the weight). I noticed the strong impression of the rim from the die cap but feel there shouldn't be any reverse details on the obv. of your coin if a second planchet entered at the same time.

(The reverse die also seems to have been tilted when it struck unless that's just the shadow from the plastic.)

Topicalbats is correct. This is an in-collar uniface strike involving a split or rolled-thin planchet and another planchet of presumably normal thickness. If it was a split planchet, then presumably the striated face was directed toward the anvil (reverse) die and smoothed-out by the strike.

Thanks Mike! That makes it Bats: 1 ANACS: 0

And I took a closer look at the reverse and found what seems to be pretty clear evidence that it was a split planchet with the striated side facing the anvil die as you mentioned would be the case if it were split and not thin rolled.
