Hi Guys! Found this 2012 Lincoln D Shield that looks to me lake a lamination that starts from Lincoln's ear all the way to the rim of the coin or vice versa. It doesn't look like damage I can see right though it to the coin except from the beginning of his ear wich looks like the start of a die crack and its not any kind of foreign gunk. So I'm wondering if this is a Lamination?
Lamination issues don't happen on a zinc planchet, plated copper cent. You can have a peeling clad area, or a plating removed area. That is what I'm seeing on your coin. A coin scratch on the surface of the coin. On these there will be a trench, with an area where the moved metal could be: Note on this coin. There is an area where the plating was removed, and zinc is showing. On the second area where the plating was not removed showing the removal of just the plating as it is not as deep. But neither of these have a premium. They are not a mint error. They happened post strike to the coin. (damaged) Note on the one with the deeper trench, you can see where the plating was transferred on this coin. It rises, but is not a die crack. Just a damaged spendable coin.
@ Coop Thanks! I'm learning something new everytime. I didn't know that Lamination didn't happen on zinc coins. Now I know and knowing is half the battle! Go Coop! GI Coop! Lol!
