I'm fairly new to the coin collecting world. I came across this 1923 penny and I was wondering why the 3 looks like this. Thanks for your input!

something bumped into that area and pushed the 3's metal a bit

I see a large scratch running through the date, and it nicked the 3. Circulation damage.

What ever hit the coin in that area the contact pushed the metal out of place and caused your coin look the way it is today.
