I beleive this is WDDO-002 listed on Wexler's. The R has the most pronounced notching/split on lower legs. All the die cracks are the same as far as markers. The D appears as an RPM but is not listed that I can find by itself or as a marker, maybe because it is minor. Any thoughts appreciated.

congratulations

WDDO-002 is solid... maybe a X-REF to DDO-001

and yes, looks like an RPM to me too.

Got to thinking about this Quarter I posted some time ago and thought I would try and attribute the RPM but was unable to again. Now I am wondering which MM it is. It resembles the large D, MMS-004 used on the 1952 D Quarter to me more than the one listed for the 1951D, MMS-003 but maybe thats because it is an RPM? Or maybe I am way off. I assume it is the MMS-003 but just thicker. Thanks in advance for any input.

Interesting and congrats.

It has a lot of characteristics similar to WDDR-002. Unfortunately, all too often Wexler doesn't provide images of the MM to help clarify the variety.

I'm wondering if it's a new DDO since he doesn't mention the notching in the MM or if he just missed it?

To me, that MM look like MMS-003.

Any chance you can add an image of the crack on the base of the bust over the 19?

IMO is more versus 1951-D DDO-004, 4-O-II-C and the MM it is OK for that year. If I am not wrong it is the Die 2 and it is correct.

I'm going to revive this older thread due to personally knowing GSP and him just now bringing this one to my attention. To my aging eyes, that is without a doubt an RPM. This coin's reverse appears to obviously have been struck by a later stage die. As a result, the reverse devices in the pictures are wider and/or flatter which can be 100% typical of a worn die. However, to my knowledge, without any form of Strike Doubling apparent on the reverse devices that I can see from the pictures, I have never seen Die Deterioration create such obvious and very defined splits on the serifs of a mint mark. The extra "wideness" of the mint mark I believe also follows suit, and is consistent, with the results of a heavily used die as shown by the other devices.

While I am not a Quarter collector, hand punched mint marks are hand punched mint marks regardless of which denomination coinage they are on. Without researching this particular RPM, and if it in fact has not been attributed elsewhere, I would definitely give it a total green light as an possible new listing. Very nice find GSP!!! Possibly a new discovery? As I said, I'm not sure because I'm not into Quarters that much at all. If you cannot find a match anywhere, I would definitely pursue it if it were mine. Just my thoughts here folks. Thanks. &
