This was fascinating! I don't mind the colors, but I love the details. I first saw this coin on David Lawrence and was convinced that it was out of my range. I moved things around, sold some coins, and negotiated a discount on top of everything else. Sunshine Rare Coins has a 1796 Draped Bust dime (which I have read is between 3-4 times as common, especially in higher grades) with nicer toning (seems to be his thing) in a higher grade with less details priced higher than what I got this coin for. The low grade made this coin acquirable to me in the first place, as I could never have bought one in an AU(58) or an MS holder. Maybe this is the next best thing for a type coin! Part of me wonders what would happen if it ever ended up at a heritage auction. Does anyone else notice that coins in heritage auctions often seem to have higher grades for what they are, are more likely to be CACed, and less likely to be detailed? Another part of me wonders what would happen if I resubmitted this down the road--is AU(58) really such a sin for this coin? I know the risk of it getting detailed is WAY too high, though. This is a strange type coin, but sometimes this happens when one waits for the chance to get THE type coin for one's collection--sometimes it ends up being the scarcer date. I wonder if this is in the Top 30 1797 dimes in existence. It has since gotten a gold shield.

Congratulations on your great acquisition. Maybe a reconsideration of grade might work. Completely forgot the discussion of this coin we had last year. I guess I look at too many coins and even recent ones fade quickly from memory.

I knew this one looked familiar. Great buy and a great looking example . At first glance I had this at AU50/53, came back and had it at AU53/55. The more I look at it, the more I could side the argument for AU55/58. Most certainly a coin needed in hand to evaluate. I wouldn't risk the crackout, but as NS said, might be worth a reconsideration, nothing to lose.

Congratulation on a great buy. A super nice example that looks under graded.

I'll reiterate my opinion that this coin never saw circulation.

Thanks for your opinions! I will weigh sending it in for a reconsideration? There is a way to do this where they will keep it as an AU(53) at least (to erase the possibility of detailing it with questionable color) yet raise the grade if it is appropriate?

Yes, you won't have to worry about a lower grade or a details grade with reconsideration. They'll only reholder if it upgrades. Just need to notate minimum upgrade increment on the sub (+ grade or full grade).
I'd be curious what CAC has to say on this one. Almost certainly has to bean, wonder if it would go green or gold.
