The rim damage on this cent is deep but doesn't touch the letters. Could this be a damaged planchet prior to the die press? I'm not sure if there is anything in the minting process that would make that mark but wanted to get your thoughts. Thanks

I wonder if this was caused when the coin was encased in the cello wrapper and the coin moved under the crimper.

The damage definitely occurred after it left the striking chamber. you can tell this because of the metal movement.

It is after strike. Two possibilities: 1. Like Dear say, or by hazard the coin was roll on side of the band after ejection and was grip by rolls (in this case the both sides of coin have same marks). I saw some on of the second point, but most come from cell machine.
