Sometimes questions come up about coins toning in TPG holders. This can be caused by different things - for a couple of examples, improper storage (as the holders are not truly air tight), or some type of residue on the coin which may at some point after grading and encapsulation alter the surfaces. I found the following coin, currently listed on a popular auction site, an interesting example. What happened to this cent is anyone's guess. I didn't share the reverse, but it looks very similar.

To stop further patination to brown, this coin needs to be in an airtight container, such as screw sealed acrylic capsule.
I have quite a few MS+ copper and bronze coins with nice red luster, but they are of such low enough value not to have to bother with capsules as mentioned above. I will just let them quietly patinate to full chocolate brown, despite the fact that lots of collectors prefer near to pristine as possible, which means full red luster.
Same applies for silver coins.
Much more tempted to only encapsulate very high grade lustrous coins, that have associated high value. The value limit you set is up to you.

If it wasn't for those 3 black spots that coin would have the toning look of a sweet tri color sherbet which in my opinion would be very sort after by toning collectors . Like the saying goes : Don't look a gift hoarse in the mouth .

And this is why the TPGs refuse to guarantee the colour designation of copper/bronze coins. The colour can change, despite the best efforts of the TPGs and the coin's owners.

I agree it is interesting toning, and to their credit the auction site did flag the coin as being toned in the title of the listing, though it's very apparent from the pics.

Now only if they all toned like this. Very reason why I do not buy or collect RD Cents. Get care has to be taken when collecting Red's.

So would you say you are more neapolitan ice cream guy? or neapolitan toner kind of guy? Coins can change all the time in holders, hence why I've posted in the past it's a good idea to check on everything you own every quarter in humid environments or bi-annually in nice dryer climates, just on the off chance coins need to be dealt with, conserved or moved elsewhere. I lost a complete IHC cent collection and a LHC collection by not checking on them for almost 5 years in storage, while I was away at college, they were in old "BAD Harco" albums that used PVC and most every coin was damaged badly. Do you prefer toned coins? That has to be has to be an introspective and subjective assessment.

As you said, it's very subjective! I just ran across this coin while looking for a MS67+ RD 1930's Philadelphia-mint cent. When I first started collecting I wanted all my mint-state coins untoned, but that evolved over the years into an appreciation for original surfaces and what I consider to be attractive toning. 20 years ago I wouldn't have even considered purchasing the proof Morgan in my avatar, but when I came across it a little over a year ago, I couldn't get my checkbook out fast enough .

I'll always wonder why our Mint could not have found a way to make our coins last better.
