Yes, could be a substance put on the surface and heated. Definitely not original over time, but accelerated and chemically altered.

Thanks for feedback. I felt certain when I saw the coin that it was altered. This seller has a bunch of different types. I guess this can be as easy way to pick up a few bucks, but I wouldn't do it.

Definately altered in a non-natural way, I think it looks ugly..

Not market acceptable toning. Notice how it extends over the rims and the reverse left has discolored and bubbled from heating, this is 100% PMD.
