What is the grade? I understand that the reverse reflects a weak strike.

It's like looking at two different coins. In terms of color, luster and sharpness.

Doug Winter suggests, however, that on early gold branch mint issues the obverse will almost always carry the grade because the reverses tend to be weak or flatly struck. But I can't tell much about the surfaces on this coin, and the color mismatch is odd, regardless of strike issues. That being said, I am not skilled enough at early gold to venture a grade or to correctly distinguish wear from a weak strike. Interested in seeing what people with more experience grading early gold say about this one.

So, the color mismatch is because it is a scan, and my latest scanner allows for different filters/color tones to be added to the scan. Unfortunately I was distracted between the first and second scan, and didn't match them correctly.

Much larger images needed. These are pretty useless.

Photos aren't great but this piece has a lot of wear. I'd go as low as VF-25 for the reverse. The much stronger obverse might make XF-40. There does appear to be some obverse luster which I would not expect given the apparent overall wear. Please post better photos if you can.

Notice the strong repunching of the date; very cool feature!
