Hello,

Looking for some thoughts, opinions, suggestions, and/or comparisons on this 4 reale cob.

I think it is likely authentic. Mexico city early 1600s?

It's priced at 190 euro. The price will drop at least 20% on June 4....

Thanks in advance for any opinions on this specimen!

So I have found a few comparable examples; KM 38, yes?

The one I am looking at has been cleaned; likely not in the mid-1600s . . . how much does this impact value and/or collectibility? I am torn. I think it's a cool and interesting piece, but would much prefer a heavy patina.

Looks like Assayer P, Mexico 1634-1666. According to Sedwick's book, a lot of seawater salvage cobs from the Conception (1641) show this assayer. That could explain the shininess. The weight is about what you'd expect from a real 4R. Conception recovery Mexico 4R and 8R cobs are very common, which makes authenticity more likely. It seems like a fair price to me.

thanks @thq - my internet research was pointing me in that direction, but without the specifics of the possible Conception link. I may hold off on the cob . . . it's a cool piece and I think - as you say - 'fairly' priced - it likely won't sell for 190 and drop in price in a few months.

I have a 2 Reale posted on another thread - it has a counterstamp on it and it's priced at 99 euro.

This forum has been fantastic for me to begin collecting; I have learned a lot and had many good leads. As a new collector, the feedback is so valuable for me.
