I know this topic has been addressed before. I've read several old threads on the topic. Having said that, I'm evaluating a collection with some low grade key & semi-key dates. Most of the collection was put together in the 60's & 70's...& many of the coins were pulled from slot machines in Vegas. I'm not a beginner but I'm a long way from being an expert. Trying to avoid any issues.

The threads I read indicate it's not unusual for a G4 Morgan to weigh in the 25.7-25.8 range. I can't find anything on what's acceptable for a coin that's poor to ag. It's my understanding that Barber coinage can be as much as 6% underweight. Not seeing anything quite that low but have one that's 25.4 grams which is almost 5% light. Anyone have a low ball coin & a scale?

I had constructed a weight chart just for this specific reason, to help identify possible counterfeits. Unfortunately, my data stops at VG because I simply didn't have anything lower than that to assess. With that said, It seems that the Morgans maintain their normal 26.73 grams in grades from MS to XF. Then on average they lose about .25 grams per grade.

Morgan dollar Weights:

MS= 26.73g
AU= 26.73g
XF= 26.73g
VF= 26.50g
F= 26.25g
VG= 25.97g
G= ?
AG= ?

So according to my observations it would not be unreasonable for a G-4 to weigh 25.75g and an AG-3 to weigh about 25.50g.
A pair of calipers is handy too for measuring the diameter @ 38.1mm and the thickness @ 2.4mm

Just weighed a near lowball/slick 1879-O at 25.2 grams (not the most expensive scale)

So assuming your slick is graded Fair-2, that would be consistent with loss of .25 grams per grade.

Just cracked out a P-01 1806 quarter. Weight is 5.8 grams versus 6.74 grams uncirculated weight, or 14% weight loss. That's the highest circulation weight loss I've ever seen on a coin, though seawater corroded Spanish cobs can lose much more than that.
