This coin I just bought .
I will weigh it when it arrives and has return privy if I see any issues.
I bought it because I think I got a fair price on it and it looks legit in the pics and I wanted a 74 Philly.
I generally avoid raw Trade dollars unless I can handle them first.

The holder is in rough shape so its hard to get a good feel on the surfaces and impossible to grade from the pics . Reverse holder near the right wing is really rough thats not the coin haha.

I am going to assume it has some hairlines or has been cleaned.
It has a poor strike on the reverse left eagle leg and I think the Lady liberty on the obverse.
Details look good to me .
Curious your all thoughts . Also notice something in the reverse bottom denticles .
Anyone have a clue on what variety this besides type 1 .
I will get more pics once it arrives.
Still looks pretty nice for the money.

There are lots of excellent fakes of these, and pictures alone will not provide absolute proof, if genuine or not.

Comparative ping tone test against known genuine, and accurate weight can provide additional simple tests.

Parts of the design of coin pictured are rather ill defined, as magnification pics demonstrate.

The coin appears to have the correct type 1 obverse and correct type 1 reverse for the date. I too would have some concerns about the denticles and the odd area under "United" on the reverse almost looks like a putty to conceal something. I have a counterfeit 1876S that passed the ping test but failed a specific gravity test. I filed the reverse rim to expose the brass core to prove it. Without access to XRF, a specific gravity test is probably your best bet for authentication.

That area under united is on the holder it looks like , I do not think it is on the coin but once it arrives I will weigh it and do a magnet test for sure.

The coin appears to be genuine.

On the 1874 business strike there were 10 die pairs used. To my knowledge these 10 die pairs on the 1874 are not cataloged anywhere for public use by number. There are currently two authors working on Trade dollar books that should be released in the next year or two that should help with Trade dollar varieties.

OP Example
1874-Trade-Dollar-Looks-Authentic?

PCGS 1874 - Jason, I believe this genuine example came from the same obverse die as the OP example. Note the waves above the foot do not touch the dress. Solid strike on stars between waves and branch, and all other stars have a soft strike. The denticles between the foot and branch have a soft strike like the OP example. The date is in the same position as the OP example.

Common PCGS die used on 1874. Note the waves above the foot touch the dress, and the date is in a different position.
