I know this may be a stupid question but how much is a troy pound? How many ounces is in one etc. The reason I ask is I have about 50 troy pound .9999 pure silver walking liberty rounds my grandfather gave me and had never thought anything about them until now and was just wondering how the weight weighs between a regular pound and so on. Thanks in advance

Let me start off by saying there aren't any stupid questions in this forum, as we are all here to learn and the best way sometines is to ask questions. You will find that a great many of these folks here have a geat deal of wisdom and we can all learn from them. Having said that here is the answer to your question:

A troy pound will equal exactly 12 ozs. troy weight. At the same time it will also equal 13.16571 U.S. Avoirdopois ounces. So it will depend on which one you want to convert to. Here is a web site that may be of help:http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/weight

Thank you very much along with all the other coins my grandfather gave me these were in a box by themself there is exactly 50 of them and I have no idea why he got them or where but the recent conversations of silver prices is what made me think about them again. I will pull one of them out and show you what I am refering to incase some others doesn't know, the reason I didnt take pictures of them with the other coins is because I knew they werent legal tender or anything and only worth basically what ever silver is worth at the time

here is the pics I had promised. I used the morgan to just show the sheer size of this 1lb round. This one is the only one that wasnt in a plastic case for some reason so its a little scratched up and looks like my grandfather enjoyed fondling it and maybe wiping it down a time or two. So in my mind this one was his favorite so its the one I figured I would take the picture of

Bryan1315,what a wonderful gift from your Grandfather! He must have been looking ahead, buying these as an investment in silver. Seems like you have about $8000.00 worth of silver with 50 of these!!! WOW!!!!!! Mike [:p]

P.S.As OldDan stated there are no stupid questions. Never be afraid to ask.

Troy units are slightly larger: 22/24ths larger, to be precise. The history of the difference between troy weight and avoirdupois weight is linked to mediaeval coinage.

IIRC, when they started to use 22 carat (.917 fine) gold and silver in the coinage, it took 1 avoirdupois pound of pure gold or silver to make 1 troy pound of coins. The definitions were written into law, and (with a few minor modifications) stayed the same ever since.

Edited to correct: I had that around the wrong way! Sorry.
