I've only recently gotten into the hobby of coin collecting, But I find it funny how most coin dealers will give you coins in change that other people, including people who don't collect coins, would hold onto.

A while ago I went to my local coin dealer, I forgot exactly what I purchased, But I was suprised to receive in change two (Surprisingly well conditioned) Kennedy half dollars. It was unusual for me, since I'm used to being handed quarters and nickles in my change.

Then today I went down to the coin store and purchased two gloves for coin searching for 2.00$. I handed him a five dollar bill, instead of the expected three invidual dollar bills I thought I was going to get back in change, he gave me these.

What-Have-You-Recieved-In-Change-From-Your-Coin-Dealer?

(A Susan B. Anthony dollar and a Two dollar bill.)

Maybe it's just me, But I found it funny that somewhere in the country, people are collecting these, and here I'm getting back in change.

It also made me think, And I bet that all coin dealers are like this, And it makes me wonder if anybody else received any interesting coins or bills back from change from their local coin dealers. (or at coin shows, etc.)

I wish I had a "neighborhood" coin dealer. I wonder how many neighborhoods I'd have to pass through before I actually found one. I did receive a really pretty mint state 50-st qtr as a bonus when I ordered a coin from a guy on the internet. It was a nice little surprise and the only seller to ever do that, too.

Growing up as a kid (some 30+ yrs ago), my coin dealer would give me change in Buffalo nickels, Indian Head cents, silver coins and silver certificates. He was a nice retired fellow who wanted to help me expand my collection. Needless to say, this man fueled my interest in collecting and was a true gentleman and friend.

Unfortunately, I haven't been to a B&M shop in years. I used to LOVE going through the dealer's 20c junk bin of foreign coins. I would sit there for hours with a long list of my collection and check each coin in the bin against my list. I'd guess I got at least 5000 different foreign coins that way (probably more). I went into a few shops since I moved from there (Long Island, New York) and haven't had any luck. When I ask for the "cheap foreign bin" I get that funny look from the owner that says they do not want to be bothered for those types of purchases, making me feel like a cheapskate or an idiot child (same feeling I got at Walmart yesterday when I went to get back the $1.18 they overcharged, they act like their doing me a favor giving me back my money!). Anyway, the point of this story is that this dealer in NY often gave back Ikes in change. Sure, I know a circulated Ike is worth exactly a dollar, but I darn near finished a set that way.

I get the sense that the local guy I go to sometimes gets bombarded with common stuff like Ikes, etc. People collect them sometimes but I think they mostly take up space in the display case. He has stacks and stacks of proof and mint sets - seems like no one wants them - no wonder they have gotten so cheap.

I recently completed a 1973 Topps Baseball Card set. I'd had all the cards in a box from when I was 9 and decided to complete an entire set.

I went to the same guy to round out my set and he had boxes and boxes of common cards. He said he'd probably never sell half of them. People brought in sets to sell and he'd pull out the more valuable cards to resell and put the rest in a box hoping for people like me to come along.

So, I think they might figure - what the heck, give some of this stuff away and make someone happy. Maybe they will come back again.

I always check the change from my local stamp and coin; more often than not there is recent BU stuff, but occasionally I've gotten back circulated George VI and "Young Head" Elizabeth II stuff.

It's similar to stamp dealers who sell by mail using older mint stamps on their mailings. Subway in NYC usually mails from the UN Building and uses UN stamps to mail their catalogues. The idea is that the stuff is so common to dealers and it isn't unusual for them to have an Overstock in it, so they use it for postage, despite what the catalogue says its worth.

Believe it or not, my dealer gives out really worn or damaged buffaloes and impaired proof dimes and cents as change. He says that there really is no way to actually sell them, so he might as well make receiving change rather fun.

I went to my local coin store for the first time the other day and bought a few world coins. They gave me a Bicentennial half dollar in change! That's only the second half dollar I've ever had :-)

Well, If you want some half dollars... I will be happy to send you some for face value+ shipping.... I would love to get them out of the area :).

On the dealer change. I figure when they buy collections... they just figure in face value for stuff like that...then just dump it in the change drawer. I get 1940s nickels and BU quarter all the time in change from my dealer. The stuff is very common and not worth much more than face if any.

HAHAHAHAHA....great thread! My fav coin shop always gives me back "junk" he bought from people that walk in thinking they have something special. He usually buys an entire lot of mixed coins including what he calls "plain old pocket change", then he uses that in his cash drawer. I've gotten back all manner of things from him, bicentenial coins, dollar coins, ken halves, etc. He looks at me expecting a reaction and I just put it in my pocket like it's nothing....hehehehehe....kind of a little game we have since I'm there so often. He's even slipped me some foreign stuff that I didn't pick up on until I got home...he's a jokester!

One of my local dealers gives out older common (non-silver!) BU coins in change. (My best was a 1965 Dime) On July 4th, they gave change with BU Bicentennial Quarters + Halves and 1976 $2 bills.

One dealer at the last big show gave everyone new $2 Bills in their change, one gave common postwar wheat cents for the 1¢ increments in their change(!), and one guy selling silver JFK's gave clad JFK's as change....
