Not sure I get it, is there no double dies w/o notching? How/why does notching occur? If the master die is double punched to create a double die (versus a double strike or Machine Doubling)how would this process create a "notch" which would have to be a raised portion on the die?
Is there a good discussion/article somewhere on the entire minting process (in extreme detail) from start to finsh?
That's a bunch of loaded questions. On coppercoins forum one member covered the 9 different classes of doubled dies. Lets see if this answers some of your questions: http://www.coppercoins.com/forum/vi...hlight=class
Bob: The 1989 Cents have wider devices starting that year to 1991. Compare your coin with another you find to see if it is really different. It just looks different because of the wider/fuller devices on the reverse.
I think the class 6 distended hub doubling usually only indicates extra thickness on the letters which rarely exhibits separation I don't think you will see any notching on that specific hub doubling So that;s a doubled die without notching class 6
