Seeing as how I've got a ton of folders with a ton of holes still. I was thinking of buying bulk silver coin deals from ebay. you've seen 'em, they advertise unsearched random assortments of silver coins...usually in 1/2 pound increments. I've found a couple that have "promised" all the coins to be collectible grade (whatever that means). Culls and other coins like dateless buffalos can be collectible if someone so chooses. Anyways, since I'm not too hung up on grade, as long as a date/mintmark is legible, I was thinking of going this route. What would be a fair price range for 8 ounces assorted silver coinage assuming average grade would be G. And does anyone have a favorite vendor on ebay that they would recommend? or better yet, a vendor they would avoid at all costs? any help on this matter would be much appreciated. sorry for the long winded post.

So, to sum up, here are the questions I have:
1) fair price for 8 ounces silver coin? (asstd)
2) favorite/trusted vendors?
3) vendors to avoid?

May I suggest trying your local coin shop first, most of them have piles of so called "junk" silver that they have bought from people selling there so called "junk" silver coins for silver value only.

I would except my "local" coin shop is 23 miles away. I remember growing up, there were at least 4 within bike or skateboard distance. Now, not so much.

I'm not an ebay person.....but this sounds eerily similar to the ads I've seen from Littleton, HSN, The Washington Mint, The New York Mint, etc. etc. etc.
They offer little batches of assorted "silver" coins....both Foreign and U.S.
Also seen "non-silver" batches/bags such as Wheaties and Buffalos and the like....
My advice would be to STEER CLEAR OF THOSE OFFERS !....they're ALWAYS badly overpriced for what you actually get.....plus shipping and handling.
There are good outlets for "junk silver" coins, I'll let others point you to those sites.
But yeah, I agree with John1......check your local coin shop first and foremost.

OOOPS did it again
to CCF
I wouldn't. There is no such thing as 'unsearched'
Do you have a local coin club?
If not, coin shop would be my next stop.

I'm not influenced by the "unsearched" aspect of it. I know that's a bunch of B.S. I'm looking to fill some non-key holes in my many different folders. which is why I considered buying an assorted group of coins. I know they've been looked through for all the keys, varieties, etc. I'm looking for fairly common dates across a wide spectrum of denominations and types. and no, 23 miles isn't far for an occasional trip. I've only ever bought single denominations from dealers. never assorted bulk. what would I look to be paying for bulk silver coinage from a dealer? I usually end up paying in the range of 8-10x face for silver coins. (i think)

plus, part of the fun is the hunt. which is why I don't drop off a list of coins I need and buy them straight up.

If you are patient, you might be able to find some deals. I would try to pay a minimal amount over the melt value of the silver - as you should be able to resell anything you don't want for close to that. So, that would minimize your risk.

I have paid 10x face for a couple rolls of Franklins and have not been disappointed. I wouldn't advise 10x face for the lots you are describing. The important thing is to let the 500 overpriced ones go and only get the 1 that is at the right price.

You can just google "melt value silver". There's a bunch of sites that will calculate it for you.

That is a good thing I say just shop around you will find a place to buy things.. There are antique stores that sell coins. Auctions, flea markets, yard sales just look around and you will find good deals..

Best practice. This could change daily, given the volatile nature of the economy. Then, look for bulk deals on ebay with a Buy It Now which meets the value criteria, so you don't get caught up in a bidding war in an auction.

Patience is your friend. Deals can be had.

thanks for all the advice. I've pretty much hit every single outlet that would sell anything remotely coin-ish. I make regular trips to antique shops, swap meets, and I hit the garage sales on weekends. I've had one or two vendors that I had good dealings with in the past, but one of them doesn't seem to be active lately. It looks like the melt value of silver coinage is in the area of 12.50/oz So I'll be using $100/half pound as my measure...
