Very nice coin indeed, Paul. Interesting that no matter the portrait style, Caracalla's brutal nature seems to evidence itself. The brooding Neanderthal brow. *shaking head* The reverse...is so ironic, given the enmity known to have existed between he and Geta. Brotherly love...not so much.

Thanks guys I'm glad you like the coin...
It was an impulse buy from my favourite seller it just really appealed!...
In my opinion the wear on the obverse die gives the portrait a bit more umph!...Making Caracalla look sterner and more imposing...
The reverse depiction, as Mike said, is quite surreal in that a couple of years later Geta would be slain on the orders of Caracalla and the latter would then proclaim "damnatio memoriae" on his murdered brother.
I wonder what would have happened if the brothers had split the Empire east/west, this idea being quelled by their mother Julia Domna?...Probably a severe civil war!

The op coin is, I'm not going to say rare, but certainly less common without the star in the central reverse field or Caracalla's portrait being radiate.

Paul.

That is a really sweet Caracalla, Paul. Indeed, as Mike said, the brutality of the man does appear evident in the portrait.

It's not often we see the large bronzes in such nice condition. Thanks for sharing.
