Hi, I hope everyone is well.

I was given this bank note back in the early 1990s as a child by a family friend and I have been struggling to find any info about it.

I have found one image of a note that is the same type on a UK website from Natwest group but other than that there seems to be very little info available and I have not been able to find any notes the same that have been sold at auction.

I am currently waiting for replies from some auction houses and specialists with estimates but I thought I would also try here to see if anyone knows anything about this note.

The more I have looked into it the more interesting the history and subject gets to me.

Any info or interest woyld be great. From what I can tell its a very scarce type of note.

The images I've taken were taken on a long exposure in a poorly lit room to try and show the detail and ink colour difference. I think this has also meant the creases and marks appear much more pronounced than in person.

Thanks for looking and I hope this is of interest to people here.

I received a reply from the Natwest group archive and thought I should post it for people to see what info I've found so far. It's been really exciting for me to get this info. This is the majority of the email I received.

Thank you for your email.

We only have one example of a £5 banknote of George Moger & Son in the archive which is almost identical to your own. We have number F7404 compared to your F7416, both dated 1 October 1855. The clerk's name that is written above the word Five is WH Kerby. He would have entered the banknote on the bank's register of banknotes. However, it is signed by George Moger (scored out on the very bottom right).

Other things that might be of interest to you are that the banknote was printed by Benjamin Shaw - under the crest you'll see 'Shaw late Ashby & Shaw' written. Shaw was a printer based at 56 Lombard Street, London. The crest is a corruption of the arms of the City of Bath, and illustrates the bank's local name. The principal differences are that there are four complete courses of masonry only on the city arms, instead of seven, and three battlements instead of four.

I'm afraid we aren't able to value the banknote but you might want to get in touch with Pam West. She offers a free valuation service and for more information you should have a look at her website at value my banknotes - Pam West British Bank Notes

Pam West literally wronte the book when it comes to values.

Provincial notes is one area I haven't really got into, I keep meaning to but the poor condition and drabness of many of these notes combined with their expense has rather made me procrastinate on the sidelines.

Good luck though, I hope its worth a fortune.

@Jbuck thanks for the welcome.

@DavidUK thanks for the wishing of fortune. From what ive found online I would guestimate it to be worth 1-300 with wishful thinking but after speaking to an archive who only have 1 on record and other people who can't find any reference to these notes I guess there is a possibility it could be worth more.

Been pretty interesting learning about them and trying to find information tbh.

Btw I am a total forum noob so I have no idea how to reply to people properly. Sorry to anyone I don't manage to give a direct reply to.
