Hello Folks,

I have acquired a Portuguese Mozambique banknote recently. It is a 1000 Reis 1909 banknote (Pick No. 32).
Upon searching the Standard Catalog, I realised that there is no Signature Varieties mentioned.
But I did find 2 different signature varieties uploaded on http://www.banknote.ws website; the link I've mentioned below:

http://banknote.ws/COLLECTION/count.../MOZ0032.htm

If you observe, there a total of 3 signatures on the banknote. My note matches to the one catalogued as 32(2). But the signature on the left hand side (O Gerente) doesn't match. So, I have a couple of queries.

1) Can someone identify the O Gerente (The Manager) Signature.
2) With the "O Gerente" Signature being different, does it constitute a separate variety or the "O Gerente" Signature isn't important when it comes to variety category in Portuguese Mozambique banknotes.
3) My serial number is 582482 (P-32(2)) whereas the Serial number 705089 has signature variety 32(1) again followed by signature variety 32(2) but this time serial number is 894836.

Does it mean that the Vice Governor repeated again on the banknotes?

Any information on this would be helpful...

Thanks,

Shabbir

Hi

There are a lot of unique notes from that time period. Remember that records weren't very good and since these are bank issued "Banco Nacional Ultramarino" the records are even spottier than Banco de Portugal or the national bank. Sorry I can't answer any of the questions, I have a unique specimen of 2$50 escudos from 1922 in Portugal. You can send the picture to banknote.ws to have then enter it. I sent mine and haven't gotten a response, so don't be too upset if no one gets back to you.

Congrats on finding a rarity from a turbulent period of history.

I think it would be a tall order to know exactly who the Manager was on a colonial banknote over a century ago but that's not to say it's impossible. The signature looks hand signed (which is a nice +) but that also usually indicates either cashier or manager function/status. These positions often had a higher turn-over rate than say the Governor (or Deputy/Vice Governor) appointments (sometimes printed on).

Just to get a comparison, I was searching notes for Southern Rhodesia when I was adding to my QEII thread & trying to get a fix on the toughs ones:
http://goccf.com/t/412847&whichpage=6#3563256

Take a look at all the date variations for the King George VI version of Southern Rhodesia notes (late 30's to early 1950's) shown on the banknote museum:
http://www.banknote.ws/COLLECTION/c.../ZIM-SRH.htm
Many dates are missing but I suspect that whether one gets a missing date will have little bearing on the actual Fair Market Value of the note. Just getting a note in FAIR condition is sometimes quite an accomplishment. For some of these VF 30 (& EPQ or Original) are like UNC for more modern notes.

I wanted to make some meaningful comments on the tough issues from Rhodesia & Nyasaland, but look at all the date variations for the early QEII notes:
http://www.banknote.ws/COLLECTION/c.../RNY/RNY.htm
Once notes go back to a certain era (& the date issues become huge) it gets much harder to determine which variation (issue/prefix/signature) are tough. Typically collectors just find the whole series tough so that the actual variation becomes less important (condition being more paramount).

Some colonies printed the dates (while others didn't "ND" actually being more the norm). My point is that there were monthly new issues from colonial Rhodesia, so I'm sure that Mozambique could have easily had just as many small # of notes issued (possibly as often) back in the early part of the 20th century. I may be wrong about this, but from what I've seen so far at most auctions, collectors get more worked up about the condition of these early scarce notes.
